About Horsehair Art
Horsehair art is achieved using the mane and tail of a horse. Two main types of horsehair art exist. They are called braiding and hitching. Horse hair is prepared by hand washing and then making into pulls. A pull contains a certain number of hairs twisted together and tied on the end. Usually 8-14 individual hairs are twisted into a pull depending on the thickness of the hairs and your desired project. Pulls made from white hairs can be dyed to make more exciting colors to accent the project. Tail hair is most often used to make pulls because it is longer and usually stronger. Mane hair can be used for tassels and such. If all you have is mane hair from a horse we can usually still come up with a stunning project with what you have.

Braiding
Round and herringbone type braids are used to create braided items. The individual braided lengths can be sewn together to increase the width. Many items can be created by braiding, these include bracelets, hatbands, and keychains. Joins and splices on braided items are covered with knots of hand sewn horsehair.

Hitching
Hitching is done by making a series of half hitches over a string which spirals around and around a core Hitched horsehair items can be left in the round or flattened in a press. Hitching is much more time consuming and intricate so it commands a higher price than braiding. Hitching allows for patterns with both geometric and pictorial designs.
